This is responsible technical and administrative work assisting with activities associated with the regulation of building construction and gas, mechanical and plumbing installations for the Marshall County Building Codes and Zoning Office.  This is a 40-hour per week position.

Necessary Requirements of Work:
Graduation from an accredited four year high school supplemented with additional training and education in construction, architecture, engineering or closely related field; a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as an inspector, contractor or field superintendent; strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical and decision-making skills; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
  • Considerable knowledge of building design and construction technology; principles and practices of building inspection and codes enforcement procedures; and basic and advanced mathematical calculations including algebraic and geometric principles and calculations.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints, as-built drawings, and schematics; analyze complex technical information, draw logical conclusions, and make appropriate decisions taking into account all technical, legal and financial consequences; and compile, prepare and present detailed information in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Ability to interpret and explain pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations and obtain the cooperation of concerned parties when dealing with codes and regulatory issues.
  • Ability to prioritize job related activities in an effective and efficient manner to ensure meeting established deadlines and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. .
  • Skill in diffusing potentially confrontational situations between concerned parties.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver’s license and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
  • Certification or the ability to obtain Base Certification within first 3 months of employment.
  • Certification or the ability to obtain International Code Council Certifications within 1 year of employment.

Physical Requirements:
  • This is medium work requiring considerable static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength, and the exertion of 50 pound of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Vocalization and hearing are required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Visual acuity is required for the inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, color differentiation, and observing general surroundings and activities
